Not a Place to Work for Professionals

Just tired.... tired off being dishonesty from upper management, only having negativity from the chain of command, and being told that I will never be given the tools to succeed. Safety training is very poor quality, and severly lacking in some cases. Exec management were promoted above their capability, but were the cheap option when Alcoa left. Those ineffective leaders have surrounded themselves with friends to try and isolate themselves from the workforce. The most poorly staffed "leadership" team that I've experienced. The downward spiral is gaining momentum, and the salaried workers are leaving in droves. The reputation of Arconic in the community went from a pillar of employment (Alcoa) to the place of avoidance.

Rules only for some

HR does not do their job. It is useless to report anything. Nothing is followed up with. The safety standards are extremely low and no safety rules are enforced

Plant environment, poor management, good pay - South Plant Mechanical Engineer

PROS: - Good pay.- Many of the people are quite pleasant to work with.- The South Plant at TN Operations is way more laid back than the North Plant, so stress levels are much more reasonable.CONS: - Highly unstable / very low job security. People get let go, without warning and for non-disciplinary reasons, quite often. Even people who have worked there for over 20 years get let go like this.- Poor/little communication and direction from supervisor/boss (Senior Mechanical Engineer). Inefficient use of time. Primarily self-guided learning process for new engineers - meaning your googling skills will be what directs your learning.- The people that choose to stay long-term share this opinion: Arconic TN Operations feels like a place to go to if you are comfortable in a plant environment (including the unions and "plant" way of thinking) and want to find a job that doesn't change or evolve much.- Management here is known for lacking in communication and for making poor long-term decisions that are leading the TN Operations facilities in Alcoa, TN in negative directions financially, with the work environment, and with their employees' work-life.

No communication

There is no communication between departments. Management ignores safety concerns. Multiple people are separately working on the same project and they pick one and trash the rest

If you want to make 100k....sure work here. But that's where the fun ends.

Don't expect a life outside of this place. You can make about 100k a year, but you're going to serve a long sentence inside. Like many manufacturing companies, it's filled with management wanting more with less. Equipment sucks, Lifts are always broke, an the mechs can't fix them. I don't think its their fault. Management always wants Band-Aids. I Feel for the new people, about 20 percent of them make it. They have no chance for good training. Most of the times they are thrown into situations where they have to learn the job on the fly, That's extremely discouraging for new people. Or the new employees get slapped with 60 hours a week from the gate. Many of use Vets have mentioned NOT giving these new people 60s for at least a rotation(1 month) So they could at least get use to the swing shift, an 12 hours. If you want to make bank, sure. Unlimited OT? sure. Advancement? Sure. Everything fights you here. Equipment, management, OT.

No fun

It started out as a good job and I liked it but the longer I worked there the faster I realized how bad it actually was everyone is out to get one another and you got people that bust their butts and other people that get away with not doing nothing at all and you say something and nothing gets done about it

A lot of overtime and no life out of work

Many people is disrespectful, they yell at you and treat you like a moron. Most of the time they are angry because they don’t like to train the new people.

No advancement opportunities and low cost of living raises

I have been there for awhile now and have noticed that there is so much politics that you can never get any advancement and if you do your taking a pay cut which is why nobody from the floor who could actually do the job wants the job. It's become a revolving door and they think it's because no one wants to work but it's the entire structure and lack of any incentive to do so. Working hard there gets you nowhere. Everyone dreads the place and best part of the day is clocking out. Swing shift kills you slowly and its impossible to get off that and back to normal life. Basically good for experience and resume filler then go elsewhere.

Leadership actions do not match their words

It seems like they are just trying to sell off the plants but can’t seem to make them attractive enough to get what they want out of them. People are not valued on any level.

Good for the manufacturing atmosphere

Good for gaining skills in manufacturing but that's about. Get the skillset and move on. No room for advancement. Pros: Great training if not skilled Cons: Minimal pay and almost no advancement

Great pay, lots of overtime

If you can just go to work and don’t get involved with anyone or anything, you will do fine. Expect overtime often, especially the first 2 years. Money gets better as you learn more jobs, take notes. The work is not hard, the people, Union and management both need a major overhaul!

Poor management

The management team are very bad. They are people who start working on the shop floor and with their big mouth they climb the ladder and keep yelling at people as manager. The organization is terrible they don't know what are the priorities and they always keep changing.

Going downhill fast

Upper management will lie to your face or believe you're not smart enough to figure out what they're trying to do. They rather run you into the ground then finding ways to keep the people they get in or keep people who shouldn't be here, pushing out the ones that have been holding this place together for years. Production is always over safety. The last few years I've watched this company take a nose dive in the wrong direction

Pros

Pay

Contras

Management, schedule, creating jobs without the correct hiring process

Fast paced and stressful, but rewarding

Good and bad management, worked under both. Training is subpar, especially for salary employees. High turnover rate for supervisors due to the lack of training and the attitude and work ethic of the hourly employees. Accountability for lower performers is absent and discourages putting in extra effort. Have thick skin and be willing to learn from those you supervise—work with them and they’ll work with you. If you come in with the mentality that they work for you rather than work with you, you’ll fail. Lots of room for improvement across the plant. Initiating change is easy, implementing change is very slow and difficult. Lots of opportunities for process improvements and management encourages and supports it. Again though, implementation of the improvements is slow. If you show initiative and the willingness to learn, managers will support and help with your development. If you don’t, it goes unnoticed. Pay is good, but pay increases aren’t great. Decent vacation, only 2 sick days and plan on working holidays. Hardest part of the job is being pulled in every direction from the beginning of your shift until you leave. You’re busy and need to prioritize tasks continuously. That and some of the people. It is rewarding when you see your team developing and succeeding because of your leadership.

Not enough time to spend with your family

Can earn a lot of money but hardly anytime to spend with your family so if you got toddlers then you might want to reconsider working for Arconic , but besides that I like working here

Pros

Good pay

Contras

No weekends to plan anything with your family

Good place to work

I worked there for 6 years, some great work colleagues and staff, some of the management could of been better, but overall a good place to work, fast paced and plenty of work but if you have a good team around you it’s not a bad thing

Laid back atmosphere

CSSS. Work is not overwhelming, pay and health benefits are extremely underwhelming for salaried employees. Extra duties are expected due to loss of coverage. 15 days of PTO at start.

Pros

Hours. Relaxed atmosphere.

Contras

Low pay. Garbage health benefits for salaried employees.

Workforce entitled and lazy

Management is a joke. HR department is unqualified to handle any conflict. Workforce has learned that if you have conflict with another coworker, you can remove that conflict by running to HR and make accusation. HR will investigate accusations ONLY to find something or someone to side with accusing party. Then you will be lucky to keep your job.

Poor management

Management could care less about employees, all they care about are there numbers and getting OT covered. Work culture is okay. No work-life balance whatsoever. You can be forced to work 60hr weeks. They say you get a week off but you are primary to cover Tuesday, Thursday night and Saturday day. So not really a week off at all. No sick days, just a 3pt system. Management hates their lives and just try to make everyone else’s difficult. If you don’t have a family or a life then the 12 hour swing shift is for you.

Pros

Pay, matching 401K up to 6% and benefits

Contras

Management, Ot, Swing shift
