Low pay, invaluable experience

I'm glad I escaped this job as beauty advisor. I learned a lot about people and it was a learning experience but the retail hours and constant pushing of pre-sales, credit card openings and calling clients was just too much. I should have quit after 1 year here but instead I waited too long and got laid off around the beginning of covid.I started at $14.00 an hour in 2015 and went up to 16.65 in the nearly 5 years I worked there. I watched new hires start off making more money than I did. The 3% commission did not make a big difference. Thank goodness I'm gone now- I used the customer service experience I gained here to push my myself at my new role. If you're still working at Macy's but are on the fence about leaving, just do it now. You will find a better job anywhere else. I'm glad to have my weekends and holidays back since I quit. Oh and my managers were tyrants too.

Unorganized

fun-ish workplace, but unorganized, rude managers and coworkers. constant drama between staff. chatting call out so you will be called in on your day off

Management sucks

I witnessed favoritism & how management lowkey tries to get someone fired if they don’t like you. They also harass you about opening credit cards every 15 mins.

Simple work but terrible work structure

Macy’s is a hit or miss for most people. You’re either hired on as a sales associate or non-sales associate. There’s very little option for growth, poor compensation due to greedy overall company, and overall poor management that frequently lacks the skills actually needed to manage their own departments.The work environment is very dependent on if the managers do or don’t like you, and if you can sell credit cards or not.This company says they’re an equal opportunity company, but it’s highly dependent on which department you get hired at. - Part timers/flex have it the worst in terms of growth and pay due to lack of hoursThis store is somewhat okay for a first time out of high school job, but is overall terrible otherwise.

Working for Macy's is rewarding if the staffing is more adequate to give the Customers more individual Customer Service.

What is the best part of working at the company?I enjoy working amongst a well diverse Team of Co-workers and Management. I like working with a highly motivated Fragrance and Cosmetic Team. Not to mention the whole store's Team acts as a Family Unit in Durham, NC. What is the most stressful part about working at the company?Sometimes, the closing coverage is very limited or the Sales coverage maybe too limited.What is the work environment and culture like at the company?Family oriented although not enough staff to give the best personalized Customer service, on several occasions.What is a typical day like for you at the company?I enjoy interacting with our Customer's even though, Good; although we are staff understaffed.

pressure to meet sales goals

Not a bad place to work except the constant pressure to meet sales goals which aren't always realistic. This includes pestering customers to get the Macy's credit card.

Fun

This was a Great first job. I worked here right after high school and even though the hourly pay was low there was earning opportunity through commission sales.

Easy but slow job

Easy work if you are decent at sales/retail. However the pay is low. Commission is offered but the mall is pretty slow/not busy. Management was pretty easy going.

Just a mess. No communication,management is terrible,employees are catty and sneaky, no hours , commission is too low, attitudes from higher ups,no structure

Fun but stressful

It’s fun to work most days but it can be stressful due to short staff and rude customers. Some days are better than others. The pay is decent!!!!!!!!!

The fun times didn’t out weight negative environment.

Older coworkers are bullies and Commission hogs. Management talks behind peoples backs but doesn’t hold people accountable. No hours. Hr lead was always rude and un helpful. Over all negative environment.

The store didn't seem to care about individuals and the managers would sometimes take away your hours. The coworkers were the best part of working there.

Boring and physically tiring.

Low pay yet positive work environment. Customer traffic very sparse such that the position becomes very boring and monotonous, company does not allow any accommodations for disabilities.

Productive and fun place to work

Great place to work but beware they’ll try to lowball your wage and give you lots of responsibility with none of the benefits provided. Make friends fast cause trading days off is the only way to get a more than 3+a off.

Productive

Typical day at work consists of assisting clients throughout your department. Keeping the store neat and clean. Keeping items restocked. Putting away backstock. Signing up clients for loyalty rewards and credit cards. Helping clients over the phone with any question they may have.

A lot of hours, decent discount, commission depending on department

Pay isn’t worth the amount of work that is required to do, employee rivalry over commission, constant brand gift with purchase events

Backstabbing

Nitpicking environment and not very nice people to work with. Upper management picks on you if you don't open up enough credit card accounts. They play favourites
