Lots of work, but fufilling
Engine Cadet (Antiguo empleado) - At sea - 4 julio 2022
My time with MSC was great, the crew were understandably tired from a long hitch, while I was on there, most of the crew had been on for 8 or 9 months, the second half of my hitch was a changeover with an amazing chief engineer that came aboard and really worked hard to help others in advancing in the industry
Pros
great crew
Contras
there is always work

20 years at sea with MSC, spent more time in port in Japan, Singapore, and Bahrain than at home
CRET (Antiguo empleado) - At sea, served on 7 MSC ships in 20 years - 3 junio 2022
MSC has no regard for people with a home life. They promise 4 months on, 1 month off, but you will never ever see that. More like 6-8 months on (if you are lucky) and then they try to call you back before your 30 days at home are up. Longest time spent without leave: 18 months. Not kidding or exaggerating. Yes, the medical benefits are good, pay is okay, but the pure torture of not being able to see your home or family for more than a year is not what I signed up for. They promise you a relief person but never say when that person will arrive. Spent an average of 200+ days overdue for relief. Detailers never cooperate, only demand and threaten with AWOL if you do not comply.

Job security is good
Able Bodied Seaman (Antiguo empleado) - Norfolk, VA - 10 mayo 2022
Some co-workers aren't interested in self improvement. Cigarette smokers hurt others with 2nd hand smokers. Physical fitness is de emphasized. More time away from the ship is needed.

No family life
Able Bodied Seaman (Empleado actual) - Norfolk, VA - 30 marzo 2022
The biggest complaint is you are working on a ship for 4-6 months at a time and only get a month off after that. It's a government government job so there is a ton of red tape involved in anything. You are just a number to your detailer and you will probably never meet him or her. The pay and overtime always depends on the ship your detailer puts you on. When going through orientation they tell you a lot of things that are not true. The benefits are excellent. You also get to travel all over the world. If you don't have a family and are single you probably will love it.

Junior Engineer (Antiguo empleado) - Norfolk, VA - 16 marzo 2022
You will be gone at least ten months out of the year. Very safe working environment. Highest paying job I ever had. No mercy for anyone with mental health issues.

Able Bodied Seaman (Antiguo empleado) - San Diego, CA - 13 marzo 2022
Working in msc is a big oportunity. I learned a lot in this company. I'll start in the supply department and after that i move to deck dept. I learned how to steer the shift operating the rig how to drive the fork truck. As a deck personel i work all around from tool locker man to deck maintenance.

Exciting and Dynamic Workplace!!
Medical Services Officer (Empleado actual) - Norfolk, VA - 12 marzo 2022
I would definitely recommend this company to anyone that wishes to go back out to sea on a ship especially after serving in the Military on Active Duty in the U. S. Navy as a Shipboard Sailor and any Civilian that wants to get the experience of going to sea and see the World in support of the United States Navy seagoing mission in contested and uncontested oceans.
Pros
The Pay and Benefits!!
Contras
Being away from family while deployed out to sea.

Can be on a different project everyday. Can at sea for a while and have very limited internet activity. The pay is pretty good but is dependent of tons of overtime. Food is decent some ships are better than others. Crew members are supportive.
Pros
Pay is pretty good but you have to work a lot of overtime
Contras
Being away from the family is very challenging.

Good money, bad work/life balance
Junior Supply Officer (Empleado actual) - San Diego, CA - 17 febrero 2022
I made 160,000 by working 80 hours a week for a year straight Terrible work and life balance due to heavy work load and ship always out at sea away from cell service and family

A company with great potential
Third Mate (Antiguo empleado) - Norfolk, VA - 17 febrero 2022
As the title says, its a company with great potential. Compensation is moderate to great depending on the ship you are on. Work/life balance is probably the poorest with the expectation of 4months on the job and 1 month off but you’ll probably spend more than 4 months onboard due to a constant problem of reliefs. If they can resolve that or make it even time on and off, they would be a great company to work for.

All that glitters is not gold; it's flecks of the waves in the ocean.
Supply Utility (Empleado actual) - World wide - 5 febrero 2022
The motivation to become a merchant marine is to be able to travel and see the world and earn good money while doings so; unfortunately as of to date it's not so. Most ports of call are closed due to Covid and the money you earn is more like blood money for the life it takes from you to be able to earn a decent check. There is no work life balance. They never tell you that you will be extended for months at a time before you are relieved from your assignment. Depending on your department of work you may have to work 7 days a week and 14 hours a day. Your living conditions on the ship is minimal. The screening process used to hire people it seems if your breathing your hired. No sense of accountability from management. Rules are put in place for promotion, but they do not apply for the buddy buddy system in place by management; so if your not a A** Kisser and you do your work they are going to keep you in your place so they can promote other worthless/lazy people to lead and keep the government work release program alive so it looks like it's working to give second rate people who are not hire-able on land a job. Most people stay only because it is a government job to be able to receive the benefits that come at certain longevity points. If your in this position for a long time you probably have no life outside of maritime.
Pros
Good pay for even the minimal work. Free bed and 3 meals a day. Some travel.
Contras
Long days 14+ hours, extended assignments overdue more than 45 days, no days off in some departments, no liberty in some ports, lack of respect given by management/officers, No accountability or checks and balances.

Ordinary Seaman (Empleado actual) - Norfolk, VA - 6 enero 2022
One really great company. I recommend to anyone fresh out of school looking to travel the world before settling down. Wonderful trainers and co-workers. If you are looking to make alot of money and dont mind being away from family and friends. This is a structured job for you with a quick growth.
Pros
Free Lunches, Travel the world, Reimbursement.
Contras
Long time away from family, not alot of replacement for leave request.

Fair pay, terrible schedule, top heavy shoreside administration.
Able Seaman (Empleado actual) - San Diego, CA - 19 diciembre 2021
Life onboard the ship can vary vessel to vessel, but the pay is generally fair, and if you find the right crew, the working environment can be tolerable. You will make money only by working all the overtime available, and so you will generally make less per hour than a commercial gig. Also, due to poor manning, you will be overdue for relief every time you reach your 4 months, and the office will tend to forget about you once your attached to a ship. MSC has a "Civmar Support" office, but the office personnel and administration are woefully disconnected from the maritime world. Many of them have no clue what MSC does at sea, and cannot keep a proper turnaround for the sailors looking to do their time and go home. The disconnect is built in as this is a government outfit, and the administration is highly compartmentalized, making basic communication between shoreside and seaside very difficult. MSC will pay for your training, especially if you are trying to upgrade a credential or license, but they will take their time approving your requests. The best advice is to use MSC to get your seatime and credentials, then move on for better opportunities. MSC will use you, so keep it fair and use them while you can.
Pros
Fair pay, decent food, paid training.
Contras
Poor office management, high turnover, poor manning, always overdue.

good pay, alot of away time. must work overtime hrs for a good paycheck
Electronics Technician (Antiguo empleado) - Bahrain - 21 noviembre 2021
alot of time at sea, nothing to do but work. I was told before signing on that it was a great place to work. I met some some great hardworking people, good friends by far. you will be lucky to get relieved on time every job is overdue. I didn't like the idea of feeling like I was in the Navy all over again ...too much restrictions for off time.
Pros
good pay when you can get on a ship with overtime
Contras
too much micro management, very harsh work environment
¿Te ha sido de ayuda esta evaluación?
Job security, but no family time.
Radio Electronics Technician Second (Antiguo empleado) - On a ship around the world - 21 octubre 2021
This is a shipboard job, you have to complete a 4 month tour and even longer before you get relieved. You cannot leave unless you have a relief on board the ship. You must travel to meet the ship around the world. This place supports the Navy and military you will supply Navy ships with fuel and food. Great job for single people but not family oriented. Sealiftcommand.com Good Luck. Follow the instructions on the website, you must also have a mmc from the coast guard and a passport.
Pros
Get paid, free housing and food, see the world.
Contras
Work for months, isolation, stuck with people you may not like.
